In I-R, there are 2 genders, feminine and masculine, el is the “the” used for masculine nouns and la is the “the” for feminine nouns. However, if the noun begins with a vowel or h (which is silent) use ľ. E.G. El animal, La rocha and Ľhom. With adjectives, it is nice and simple, if they describe a masculine noun, keep the root form and with feminine nouns and an 'a' onto the end.
