The reduplicating agent《々》

1 min read · 267 words

In Maaju, there is only one character that has no pronunciation of its own, but which alters the pronunciation of other words. It is the Japanese 'noma' character, but in Maaju, it is known as 《오뤼 크ᱨᱮ볘》, or the 'urui glyphai'.

When preceding a word, the Urui character will triple the onset consonant, and then add one of three vowels between the first and last two consonants; if the consonant is a nasal, it will add 'a', if it's a fricative, it will add 'u', and if it's a plosive, it will add 'i'. Note that if there is a prefix attached to the word pre-Urui, it is removed, and then added back on after the sound change. Examples are listed below:

々 + Zhaar (Tree) → Zhzhzhaar (Tree-tree) → Zhizhzhaar (Forest)
々 + 차同르 → 츷차同르 → 치츷ᱟ르 → 々차同르

々 + Fynnuzi (Anger) → Fffynnuzi (Anger-anger) → Fuffynnuzi (Rage)
々 + 风ᱮ能能ᱩ久さ→ 风风风ᱮ能能ᱩ久さ → 风ᱩ风风ᱮ能能ᱩ久さ→ 々风ᱮ能能ᱩ久さ

When succeeding a word, the Urui consonant will take the vowel off of the coda consonant. Then, and then add one of three suffixes onto it; if the consonant is a nasal, it will add '-aru-', if it's a fricative, it will add '-uru-', and if it's a plosive, it will add '-iru-'. Reduplicate the final consonant pre-Urui, and add it back onto the ending of the word, along with the vowel it once had. An example is listed below:

Janka (Madness) + 々 → Jank (Mad) → Jankiru (Mad-mad) → Jankirukka (Insanity)
油ᱚ能까 + 々 → 油ᱚ能끄 → 油ᱚ能끼로 → 油ᱚ能끼로끆ᱚ → 油ᱚ能까々
