Order Determines Emphasis

1 min read · 131 words

Sentence order determines emphasis.

Time frame stated first, then the rest of the sentence based on importance. Things that have already been established in conversation go at the end. This means context is necessary to understand which noun is the object/subject.

“Yesterday, the green fish swam away from me quickly.”

“Ool tuk, kiogaz va ul aj ak.”

“Before day, fish-green went fast away from me.”

Time frame—prey—action—additional information

“Suk’s sister caught the fish before he could.”

“Ool e kino, kio faj a jeno Suk.”

“Before he could, fish caught by sister of Suk.”

Time frame—prey—action—subject

**This puts the emphasis on the fact that the fish was caught before Suk could.

**But if the emphasis was on the fact that it was Suk's sister that caught the fish, it could be swapped.
