1. Phonology (The Sounds of Pųma)
The sound system blends the flowing, retroflex elements of Odia (Dravidian/Indo-Aryan influence) with the advanced vowel systems of Nilo-Saharan languages.
Vowels & Nasalization (The Ogonek ˛)
Pųma uses a 5-vowel system, but features contrastive nasalization (inherited from the Odia alphabet structure and represented in the Latin script by the ogonek ˛).
Oral: /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/
Nasalized: /ą/ (/ã/), /ę/ (/ẽ/), /į/ (/ĩ/), /ǫ/ (/õ/), /ų/ (/ũ/)
Cultural Note: Nasalized vowels are highly prominent in shamanic chanting and threshold rites.
When the Ťalŝoki adopted the Latin alphabet (1725–1750 AC), they added diacritics (ŝ, ť, ő) to map unique sounds that European settlers struggled to pronounce.
2. The Noun System: The Singulative Shift
As an animistic language mirroring Eastern Nilotic, collective existence is the default. Individual items are fragments chopped away from the universal spirit.
The Grammar Rules:
Collective Base: The root word refers to the entire species, herd, or natural element.
Singulative Suffix (-t / -to / -ťi): Added to isolate one specific entity from the collective soul.
Hunted/Harvested Rule: When an animal is hunted and processed into tools or food, it takes the Recycled Suffix (-mų), signaling gratitude and reciprocity to the spirit
3. The Great Syntax Split (SOV vs. VSO)
The linguistic civil war between the Elders (Odian Pųma) and the Youth (Romanized Pųma) changes how sentences are built.
Old Odian Pųma (SOV - Subject-Object-Verb, written in Modernized Pųma)
The Philosophy: The action (Verb) is held sacred. It is internal, spiritual, and seals the sentence.
Word Order: Subject + Object + Verb
Sentence Example:
Ťalŝoki Saqwa-qwą pų-re.
(The Tribesman) (Saqwa River-Accusative) (crossed).
Modern Romanized Pųma (VSO - Verb-Subject-Object)
The Philosophy: Influenced by modern efficiency and Nilotic structural shifts after migration. The action bursts forth first, driving the narrative forward.
Word Order: Verb + Subject + Object
Sentence Example:
Pų-re Ťalŝoki Saqwa-qwą.
(Crossed) (The Tribesman) (Saqwa River-Accusative).
4. Directional Verbs (The Shaman’s Space)
Verbs do not just tell when something happened; they tell where it happened relative to the sacred geography of Gųka.
Suffix -u (Deictic Toward Woru / South): Used when an action brings something closer to the ancestral homelands, warmth, or spiritual peace.
Suffix -ka (Deictic Toward Kązra / North): Used when an action moves deeper into the cold, mountainous refuge of exile.
Prefix Amą- (Ancestor Benefactive): Added to a verb if the action is done to honor the dead or a nature spirit
Example Verb: Kat (To speak)
Kat-ka = To speak to the living/settlers (Northward, pragmatic).
Kat-u = To pray to the ancestors (Southward, spiritual).
Amą-kat-u = The Shaman enters a trance to allow an ancestor to speak through them southward.
