Incorporative and Relative Referents

1 min read · 85 words

Zgeibbeúnea has two types of referents: Incorporative and Relative. The Incorporative referents are simpler - they can be added to the verbal complex after being added to the noun

koisusg-oet
tree-hr1
kueotgairo
down-hr1(tree)-make-1s.pres

‘I'm cutting down a tree’

This sentence would only be said with the referents if more things were to be said about the tree, such as:

dzgúrotohro?
big-hr1(tree)-3s.pres.Q

‘Is this tree big?’

Incorporative Referents can also be used to create reflexives:

mae-oek
mother-hmr1
iufokeiegokuero
on-hmr1(mother)-water-hmr1(mother)(location/subj)-has-3s.pres

‘My mum's washing herself’

The second set of forms are used to distinguish separate referents, but rarely used in speech, more commonly found in literature
