Adjectives

It is important to remember that Adorish (linguistics) makes no lexical distinction between adjectives and adverbs, even though the suffix -n has been used for centuries as an adverbial marker. It is believed by some to be a clipped version of the locative but this is very dubious.
Nouns and verbs can be used as adjectives by being put in the genitive case or by being put in a non-finite form. For verbs, the -nê suffix has become a practical gerund.
From reconstructions, it is clear that Proto-Acor-Valian used two rigid classes for adjectives and adverbs which nouns and verbs could enter into. This border has since collapsed. Adjectives that descend from PAV adjectives are called base adjectives, while ones from other classes are called derived adjectives.
Adjectives in Adorish take class marking using the genitive, and can be marked for degrees of comparison:
aej-rê aes-cróe
Smooth-Gen. Rope-Abs.
“fluid technique”
These are the adjective class endings
Feminine | Masculine | Organic | Inorganic | Abstract | Neutral | |
Adjective | -che | -oe | -ae | -rê | -î | - |
Numerals are base adjectives, so are colours.
Halburan Animacy prefixes
In Halburan, adjectives take no genitive class ending. They instead take animacy prefixes which usually align to the noun classes, since the first three classes tend to be animate, while the other four are inanimate:
*se-dóe sélorôn-in
In.-Long Year-Pl.
“(the) long years”
*On the word year: the word infés meaning “winter” is usually used to refer to a duration of years, since Adoran ends its year during the winter solstice. For a singular year, the word sélorôn, a shortening of irsél orôn “sixteen” is used, as there are sixteen months in a solar Tsaváran year.
| Singular | Plural |
Animate | ys- | frô- |
Inanimate | se- | |
Degrees of comparison
As mentioned, previously, adjectives can take degrees of comparison. These degrees were derived from Adorish prepositions.
pa vo bôldô-al-lî már
1S-Abs. 2S-Abs. Strong-Comp.-Neg. Cop.
“I am less stronger than you”
The negative suffix -rî can be attached to the comparative and superlative to create a degree of inferiority. They are attached to the head adjective in the phrase:
- Positive: -
- Comparative: -ál
- Equative -ylô
- Superlative: -evî
Numerals
The numerals in Adorish can take the form of adverbs without any necessary derivation.
For making the numbers from 11 to 19, use the numeral irsél or the tens numeral required and add the conjunctive prefix to the digit numeral. For example: irsél ozío “fifteen”.
