🎓 Course 1, Lesson 2: Noun Pluralization & The Throat Swallow
In Lesson 1, you learned how to form a basic sentence using single entities. In this lesson, you will master Noun Pluralization. Arano Danso does not use suffixes like "-s" or "-es." Instead, it uses a unique internal phonetic mechanic known as The Epiglottal Split, or the "Throat Swallow."
🧱 1. The Linguistic Rule: The Epiglottal Split
To make a noun plural in Arano Danso, you insert a pharyngeal plosive [ʡ] directly into the middle of the root word.
In standard writing (romanization), this throat swallow is represented by an apostrophe ('). The rule dictates that the swallow is placed as an infixed break right before the final vowel or syllable block.
🔊 2. Speech & Phonetics Guide: How to Swallow
The apostrophe (') is not silent. It represents a physical action at the back of your throat:
Speak the first part of the word.
Briefly catch your breath or complete a sudden "gulp" or "throat-swallow" friction sound (an epiglottal stop).
Immediately release the breath to say the final syllable.
📖 3. Vocabulary Transformations
Let's see how the root words you learned in Lesson 1 change when they become pluralized:
Example 1: Cow ➡️ Cows
Singular: Pdem (Cow)
Plural: Pde'em (Cows)
Pronunciation: "Pde — [throat swallow] — em."
Example 2: Grass ➡️ Grasses / Patches of Grass
Singular: Mbde (Blade of grass)
Plural: Mbde'e (Grasses)
Pronunciation: "Mbde — [throat swallow] — e."
📝 4. Sentence Construction
Let's update our master sentence from Lesson 1 using our new plural grammar. We will keep the sentence in the OSV (Object-Subject-Verb) format.
👉 Mbde pde'em bdeg
Word-by-word:
Mbde(Grass) +Pde'em(Cows) +Bdeg(Eat)English meaning: The cows eat grass.
Context: The subject ("cows") is now specifically plural due to the internal throat swallow.
