Vowel Harmony

1 min read · 137 words

Vowel harmony in Ćidmiral is fairly simple. There are three types of vowel: the strong vowel (a), the neutral vowel (i), and the weak vowels (e, o).
The two groups of vowels, are front vowels (e, i, ei, ie), and back vowels (o, a, oa, ao).

They are arranged in pairs:
e - i
ei - ao
ie - oa

Vowel harmony starts from the first vowel of the stem, and spreads bidirectionally. If it encounters a weak vowel, then that weak vowel flips to its opposite in the pair. If it encounters the strong vowel (this only applies for the strong vowel on its own, not when it's in a diphthong), the vowel harmony changes to back harmony, if it isn't already. The neutral vowel is skipped over, and harmony continues as whatever it was before.
