Writing System

1 min read · 213 words

Gallifreyan has an unusual writing system. Words are written as circles that contain all the letters of the word (themselves smaller circles). The letters themselves are formed as in an abjad, with vowels attached to consonants. Informal writing among certain Gallifreyans sometimes omits these vowels entirely.

The order in which words are read is not right-left, top-bottom, left-right, or bottom-top, but rather goes from a start indicator to the end of the trail of circles. Typically, however, computers will display information from left-right and then top-bottom, whilst handwritten Gallifreyan will go from right-left for left-handed writers and left-right for right-handed writers, whilst starting at the top of the page for both.

This page uses Romanized Gallifreyan.
