Adjectives

Adjectives agree with the noun they modify according to the gender, number and case of the noun described

Adjectives decline across two declensions. Hard declension and Middle-Soft declension.

Hard declension adjectives end in a b, g, h, k, p, t. Soft declension nouns end in any other consonant.

Examples: bolšt (big) dob (good), povlik (old)

The good man; Dob před. A big house; Blošta dume. The old bridge; Povliko mešto. On the big bridges; Š bolštu mešti. At the good house; Va dobem dumam. With the old men; Nady povlikechu predych.

Examples: praj (small), hrov (bad), juvem (young), nov (new)

The bad man; Hrov pred. A small house; Praja dume. The new bridge; Novo mešto. On the small bridges; Š prajy mešti. At the bad house: Va hrovam dumam. With the young men; Nady juvemachu predych.

Comparative adjectives:

When nouns are being compared such as “The man is older than the woman” the adjective takes forms according to the gender and number of the first noun as follows. The word for “than” is SEV. Hard and mid/soft adjectives have the same endings.

Example: The man is older than the woman: Pred se povlikek sev zadza. The bridge is bigger than the house; Mešto se bolštoka sev dume. The smaller house; Prajoka dume. Younger men; Juvemeky predei. At the older bridges; Va povlikoky mešti.

Superlative adjectives:

The biggest house, the youngest man etc For adjectives starting with a consonant such as PRAJ the following forms are used All genders use these forms

Examples:

The biggest house; zabolštikany dume. For the oldest man; Po zapovlikany pred. To the youngest child: Za zajuvemikany kreseno.

Adjective that start work a vowel (and y) undergo the following changes when the ‘za-‘prefix is joined to it.

Examples:

flat; absat; flattest ; zábsatikna / zábsatikany long; estek; longest; zestkikna / zestekikany. cozy, izalit; coziest; zeizalitikna / zeizalitikany fast, otem; fastest; zótemikna / zótemikany. short, uchal, shortest; zuchalikna /zuchalikany evil, ymrač, evilest; zymračikna / zymračikany
