Binding Adverbials
1 min read · 134 words
Adjectives and Adverbs of certain types are "binding". This means that they attach directly to the front of noun or verb they are modifying.
Binding adjectives include colour, shape, size, and texture, while only adverbs of direction are binding (f.eks 'forwards').
‘Don't start scratching down the back of the blue cat’
Importantly, only one adverbial can be bound at a time, with the additional adverbial being shunted after the noun/verb.
‘The rough blue fish’
For the binding adjectives, there is a priority hierarchy for binding. With higher adjectives binding in favour of their lower counterparts. From highest to lowest:
Colour > Size > Shape > Texture
‘The straight rough fish’
‘The small, straight, rough fish’
All other adverbs and adjectives are placed after the noun or verb they modify.
‘The old dog’
Adverbs which are being used to modify another adverb are still positioned after the verb. While adverbs modifying adjectives are placed before the noun, but cannot not bind.
