THE HOISTED TREE-CARVING METHOD
THE HOISTED TREE-CARVING METHOD
1. The Pulley and Counterweight Scriptorium
The Mechanical Setup: To write on the massive trunks of the grand Ua (Trees), the Elizans use a simple but highly effective system of ropes, wooden pulleys, and platforms built into the upper canopy.
The Execution: A left-handed scribe sits or stands on a small wooden platform hoisted up the side of the trunk. They drive their heavy bone stylus into the bark at the top of the column. As they pull the blade downwards to slice the groove, they use a foot-brake or a pulley cord to slowly lower the entire platform down the tree with gravity.
The Writing Flow: The platform descends smoothly at the exact speed of their writing. When they reach the bottom of the column near the forest floor, the slice is complete. They can then step off, reset the platform to the top, slide it slightly to the left, and begin the next column.
2. The Living Forest Libraries
Vertical History: Because of this pulley system, a single giant tree can hold decades of text stretching from the highest branches down to the roots.
The Aging of Text: Over the years, the living tree naturally grows and expands. This process slowly stretches the carved grooves, making ancient tribal laws look wider, shallower, and weather-worn. The history literally grows, breathes, and ages alongside the wood.
