Writing System

Writing System

The Vegalian writing system is very unique from a typical writing system. It behaves like an alphabet but the alphabet is encrypted in the form of a cipher using symbols, colors and mathematics. There are a set of symbols and colors you have to decrypt to get the corresponding alphabet. Extract from the Codex reveals that the colors were from gases created during the universe's humble beginnings. The following figures are the decryptions for both Anglo-Vegalian and Actual Vegalian, which is called Vegäla Yušäði.

The original direction of reading and writing Vegalian is left-to-right, with the word spelling being reversed without changing the word order, but I opted for the right-to-left direction similar to Arabic or Hebrew because it's a lot easier to write. I had a hunch about whether Vegalian was canonically written right-to-left, but Will never stated whether it's true or not so it's up for interpretation.

Structure Principles

  • 11 base symbols (0–10) form the core glyph set

  • Color values (0–10) as complementary to the glyph set to form coherent letters

  • Letters A – Z correspond to numbers 1–26 (In English), but A – Ž correspond to numbers 1–42 for this version of the language

  • Color Placement

    • On the line: add to the sum

    • Below the line: subtract from the sum

  • Words are written right-to-left (reverse)

  • Colors are limited to 4 colors on the line and 4 colors below the line, and within the range of the symbol

  • The first number in the equation refers to the glyph, with the rest of the numbers corresponding to the colors

Example Encoding

  1. Base glyph: 3

  2. Color on the line: +2

  3. Color below the line: –1

  4. Mathematical Equation: 3 + 2 – 1 = 4

  5. Final rune value: 4 = D
