Asteran Negation
Asteran negates verbs with the particle nac.
The negative particle stands immediately before the verb.
Basic order:
Subject + Object + nac + Verb
Example:
astor malgam calei
= The cantor binds the fracture.
astor malgam nac calei
= The cantor does not bind the fracture.
Literally:
cantor fracture-ACC not binds
Negation with Tense
The verb keeps its normal tense marking. nac does not change.
Asteran | Meaning |
|---|---|
nac calei | he/she/it does not bind |
nac calrei | he/she/it did not bind |
nac caltei | he/she/it will not bind |
So:
astor malgam nac calrei
= The cantor did not bind the fracture.
astor malgam nac caltei
= The cantor will not bind the fracture.
Negation with Passive Voice
The passive verb stays passive.
Asteran | Meaning |
|---|---|
nac caleit | he/she/it is not bound |
nac calreit | he/she/it was not bound |
nac calteit | he/she/it will not be bound |
Example:
malc nac caleit
= The fracture is not bound.
Negative Subjunctive
In the subjunctive, nac still stands before the verb.
Asteran | Meaning |
|---|---|
nac calārei | may it not bind / let it not bind |
nac calāreit | may it not be bound / let it not be bound |
Example:
malc nac calāreit
= Let the fracture not be bound.
This is useful for ritual refusals or protective formulae.
Prohibitive
For direct negative commands, Asteran uses:
nac + imperative
Asteran | Meaning |
|---|---|
nac calā | do not bind! |
nac calūts | do not bind, you all! |
nac calīn | let us not bind! |
This keeps the imperative system clean.
Negating Adjectives
For adjectives, nac stands before the adjective.
nac sacrau astor
= not-sacred cantor / unsacred cantor
nac calaut malc
= unbound fracture / fracture not bound
