Chikaran has a regular and predictable sound system designed to make pronunciation straightforward. Words are generally pronounced as they are written.

Consonant clusters are permitted when they are easy to pronounce. When combining morphemes creates a difficult consonant cluster, the vowel i is inserted between the consonants. This i is both written and pronounced.

Example:

C + C → C-i-C when the resulting cluster is considered difficult to pronounce.

Not all consonant clusters require this change; permitted clusters remain unchanged.
