Morphophonology

1. Overview

Maþal exhibits a system of morphophonological alternations at root boundaries. When suffixes beginning with a vowel are attached to lexical roots, root-final consonants or consonant clusters may undergo mutation. These alternations are conditioned primarily by the phonological environment, especially by the quality and length of the preceding essence vowel.

The mutation system is therefore neither random nor purely phonetic. It is a structured part of Maþal morphology, activated by suffixation and constrained by vowel class and root shape.

2. Root-Final Mutation

The most common morphophonological process in Maþal is the voicing of certain root-final obstruents before vowel-initial suffixes. In general, only the final consonant of the root is affected, and only under specific vocalic conditions. In consonant clusters, mutation likewise affects only the final consonant; however, certain clusters are lexically restricted and therefore listed separately below.

2.1 /k/ → /g/

A root-final /k/ becomes /g/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies after:

  • the short vowels a, e, ø

  • the long vowels á, é, í, ý, ǿ

  • the overlong vowels ai, ei, oi, ui, yi, øi, au

In other environments, /k/ remains unchanged.

The rule may be stated as follows:

/k/ → [g] / {a, e, ø, á, é, í, ý, ǿ, ai, ei, oi, ui, yi, øi, au} __ V

2.2. /t/ → /d/

A root-final /t/ becomes /d/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies after:

  • the short vowels e, u

  • the long vowels á, é, í, ý, ǿ

  • the overlong vowels ei, oi, yi, øi

In other environments, /t/ remains unchanged.

The rule may be stated as:

/t/ → [d] / {e, u, á, é, í, ý, ǿ, ei, oi, yi, øi} __ V

2.3. /p/ → /b/

A root-final /p/ becomes /b/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies after:

  • the short vowel a

  • the long vowels á, é, í, ý, ǿ, å

  • the overlong vowels ai, au

In other environments, /p/ remains /p/.

Formally:

/p/ → [b] / {a, á, é, í, ý, ǿ, å, ai, au} __ V

2.4. /f/ → /v/

A root-final /f/ becomes /v/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies after:

  • all long vowels á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ǿ, å

  • the overlong vowels ei, oi, yi, øi

In other environments, /f/ does not change.

The rule in short:

/f/ → [v] / {á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ǿ, å, ei, oi, yi, øi} __ V

2.5. /þ/ → /ð/

A root-final /þ/ becomes /ð/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies only after:

  • the long vowels ó, å

In other environments, there is no mutation.

The rule here is set as:

/þ/ → [ð] / {ó, å} __ V

2.6. /rk/ → /rg/

A root-final cluster /rk/ becomes /rg/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies only after:

  • all long vowels á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ǿ, å

In other environments, /rk/ remains unchanged.

The rule here is set as:

/rk/ → [rg] / {á, é, í, ó, ú, ý, ǿ, å} __ V

2.7. /mp/ → /mb/

A root-final cluster /mp/ becomes /mb/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies after:

  • the short vowels a, e, i, o, u, ø

In other environments, /mp/ does not change.

The rule here is set as:

/mp/ → [mb] / {a, e, i, o, u, ø} __ V

2.8. /nt/ → /nd/

A root-final cluster /nt/ becomes /nd/ before a suffix beginning with a vowel when the immediately preceding essence vowel belongs to the relevant triggering set.

This mutation applies after:

  • the short vowels e, i, u, ø

  • the long vowels é, í, ý, ǿ

In other environments, /nt/ remains /nd/.

The rule here is set as:

/nt/ → [nd] / {e, i, u, ø,é, í, ý, ǿ} __ V

2.9. /kt/ → /gd/

A root-final /kt/ becomes /gd/ before a vowel-initial suffix in a mixed set of short and long environments.

Mutation applies after:

·      the short vowels a, i, o, y, ø

·      the long vowels ó, ú, å

In all other environments, root-final /nt/ remains unchanged.

The rule is as follows:

/kt/ → [gd] / (a, i, o, y ø, ó, ú, å) __ V

6.3. The Three-Consonant Rule

If suffixes creates a three-consonant cluster, Maþal resolves the resulting sequence by inserting an epenthetic vowel between the second and third consonants.

This process applies after mutation and before stress assignment.

The quality of the epenthetic vowel is determined by the suffix-initial vowel:

  • before suffixes beginning with i, e, or a, the inserted vowel is ø

  • before suffixes beginning with o or u, the inserted vowel is o

This epenthetic process prevents illicit three-consonant clusters and preserves phonotactic well-formedness while maintaining harmony with the suffix.
