COMPARATIVE DEGREE OF ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS IN LPQR

1 min read · 251 words

The comparative degree of qualitative adjectives, adverbs of manner, and quantitative adverbs in LPQR is formed by replacing the ending "-o" in adverbs and "-ij," "-ǐj," and "-oj" in adjectives with the letter combination "-jeje."

There are virtually no exceptions to this rule (except that it is not recommended to use the letter "j" after the letters "c," "ž," and "š").

Therefore, the following word forms are possible:

horošo (well), horošǐj (good)- horošeje (better)

ploho (badly) plohoj (bad) - plohjeje (worse)

malo (little), malǐj (small) - maljeje (less, smaller)

boljšoj (big)- boljšeje (bigger)

mnogo (many, much) - mnogjeje (more)

The words "lučjše" (better), "huže" (worse), "boljše" (bigger), and "mjenjše" (less, smaller) also exist in LPQR, but are used primarily in informal speech.

Unlike Russian, in LPQR, consonant alternation never occurs when forming comparatives. Therefore:

nizko, nizkij (low) - nizkjeje (lower)

vǐsoko, vǐsokij (high) - vǐsokjeje (higher)

blizko, blizkij (near, close) - blizkjeje (nearly, closer)

daljeko (far) , daljekij (distant) - daljekjeje (further)

uzko (narow), uzkij (narowly) - uzkjeje (narower)

šǐroko (widely), šǐrokij (wide) - šǐrokjeje (wider)

dorogo (expensively), dorogoj (expensive) - dorogjeje (more expensive)

dješevo (cheaply), dješevǐj (cheap) - dješevjeje (cheaper)

často (often), častǐj  (frequent)- častjeje (more often, more frquently)

rjedko (rarely), rjedkij  (rare)- rjedkjeje (less often, less frequently)

bogato (richly), bogatǐj (rich) - bogatjeje (richer)

LPQR has another way of forming comparatives of adverbs and adjectives, using the word “boljeje”

“boljeje” + <base form of adjective or adverb>

Elephas boljeje siljnǐj cjem ċanis (The elephant is stronger than the dog.)
