STRESS IN LPQR
In LPQR the stress mark is fixed and typically falls on the penultimate syllable of a word.
Because LPQR makes extensive use of loanwords, speakers often retain the source language's usual stress. This deviation is NOT considered a serious error unless it interferes with comprehension. However, the standard pronunciation is stress on the penultimate syllable.
Stress in the original word | LPQR norm | Permissible deviation from the norm |
restauránt | Restaúrant | restauránt |
demokrátija | demokratíja | demokrátija |
For personal names and surnames, stress is retained as it is accepted in the native language of their speakers.
For example:
Iván, Antón, Ljubóvj (Russian female name), Popóv, Victór Marí(e) (H)ugó.
Ljubòvj | Russian female name |
ljúbovj | Love |
Shifting stress to emphasize meanings:
It is possible to shift the stress to a different syllable to emphasize the difference between words or parts of sentences. For example:
Eto vaš matj? Da, eto óna (Is this your mother? Yes, it is her).
Eto vaš brat i sjestra? Da, eto on i oná (Is this your brother and sister? Yes, it is he and she).
