Short forms of adjectives

2 min read · 429 words

Adjectives in LPQR, as in Russian, can act as both attributes and predicates in sentences. However, using the full form of an adjective as a predicate is not recommended. It is not appropriate to say: "Brat-u-mjenje - zdorovǐj i siljnǐj." It is better to say: "Brat-u-mjenje - zdorovǐj i siljnǐj homo." However, it is possible to use the short form of an adjective as a predicate, as well as the comparative and superlative forms of adjectives. The short form of an adjective is formed by dropping the endings "-ǐj," "-ij," and "-oj" from the full form.

krasivǐj – krasiv

zdorovǐj – zdorov

dlinǐj – dlin

boljšoj - boljš (this differs from Russian)

malǐj - mal (the Russian word for "little" is translated into LPQR as "malǐj")

If the remaining stem of the adjective ends in "-k", the letter "o" is inserted before this letter

uzkij – uzok

korotkij – korotok

jarkij – jarok

If the remaining stem of the adjective ends in "-n", the letter "-je-" is inserted before this letter (after the letters "j", "c", "ž", and often after "š", "-e-" is inserted)

trudnǐj – trudjen

boljnoj – boljen

nužnǐj – nužen

Examples:

Gorod-u-nas vsjegda krasiv (Our city is always beautiful )

V eto utro eto rjeka bǐl osobjeno krasiv (The river was especially beautiful this morning. )

Brat-u-mjenje zdorov i siljen (My brother is healthy and strong. )

Pjetja bǐl vo včjera zdorov, a v sjevodnja boljen (Petya was healthy yesterday, but today he's sick.)

Short adjectives are not declined for case and, unlike in Russian, do not change according to gender and number.

When acting as a predicate, a short adjective can have a dependent word group. Most often, this is <preposition> + <noun>

Etot čjempion dostojen na nagrada. (The champion deserves a reward. )

Oni rad na vstrječja (They are happy to see each other. )
