Like other languages, LPQR has adjectives. These are words that answer the question "kakoj?" and denote a property or attribute of an object. A grammatical characteristic of an adjective in LPQR is that it always ends in the letter combinations "-ij", "-ǐj", "-oj":
Русский | English | LPQR |
новый | new | novǐj, |
старый | old | starǐj, |
светлый | light | svjetlǐj, |
тёмный | dark | tjomnǐj, |
белый | white | bjelǐj, |
чёрный | black | čjornǐj, |
большой | big | boljšoj, |
маленький | small | malǐj, |
хороший | good | horošij, |
плохой | bad | plohoj. |
Unlike Russian, in LPQR adjectives are not declined and do not change endings depending on gender and number:
new costume - novǐj kostjum new costumes - novǐj kostjumǐ
new dress - novǐj platj’je new dresses - novǐj platj’i
Unlike Russian, adjectives are not substantivized. Russian masculine nouns formed from adjectives are translated into LPQR either with different words or with the addition of the word "homo":
Русский | English | LPQR |
рабочий | worker | rabočij homo (plural rabočij homǐ) |
больной | patient | pacient̬ |
прохожий | passerby | putnik, |
часовой | watchman | homo-u-post |
Russian feminine nouns often correspond to cognates in LPQR:
Русский | English | LPQR |
столовая | canteen | stolova (Plural: stolovǐ) |
булочная | bakery | buločna (Plural: buločnǐ) |
мастерская | workshop | masterska (Plural: masterski) |
Words like stolova, buločna, and masterska do not have the grammatical characteristic of adjectives, do not end in "-ij," "-ǐj," or "-oj," and are therefore considered ordinary nouns. Like all nouns in LPQR, they have a plural form but are not inflected by case.
In LPQR, adjectives are divided into qualitative and relative. There are no possessive adjectives in LPQR. When translating Russian expressions with possessive adjectives, nouns with prepositions are most often used.
Это мамина и папина комната | This is mom's and dad's room | Eto komnata u papa_i_mama |
Это бабушкины очки | These are grandma's glasses | Eto očki u babuška |
Это Лизины вещи | These are Liza's things | Eto vješi u Liza |
Лисий хвост | A fox's tail | hvost u vulpes, hvost ot vulpes |
Коровье молоко | Cow's milk | moloko ot korova |
Волчьи следы | Wolf tracks | sljedǐ ot lupus |
Qualitative adjectives describe characteristics and properties of an object that it may possess to a greater or lesser degree. Therefore, qualitative adjectives have degrees of comparison. There are far fewer relative adjectives in LPQR than in Russian or English. The most common relative adjectives describe temporal and spatial boundaries, as well as colors:
Colors (colorǐ) – bjelǐj (white), čjornǐj (black), krasnǐj (red), sinij (blue), zjeljonǐj (green), žjoltǐj (yellow).
Boundaries: načalnǐj (initial), konjecnǐj (final), krajnij (extreme), pjerjednij (front), zadnij (back), vjerhnij (upper), niznij (lower), posljednij (last).
The word "srjednij" (middle) is also a relative adjective.
Other relative adjectives are almost always used only in set expressions.
Examples:
rabočij homo (working person, worker)
učjonǐj homo (learned person, scientist)
hemiskij element (chemical element)
elektriskij zarjad (electric charge)
zvjezdnǏj vojnǏ (Star Wars)
Some exceptions are adjectives describing weather: doždlivǐj (rainy), vjetrenǐj (windy), moroznij (frosty), oblačnǐj (cloudy), pasmurnǐj (overcoast), snjegnǐj (snowy), since the characteristics they describe can be inherent to phenomena (weather, climate) or time periods (day, month, season, year) to varying degrees.
Many Russian expressions with relative adjectives are translated into LPQR using hyphenated constructions with a preposition and a noun:
